Betting on Racedays

If it is your first time to the races, or you just want to look a little more 'profesh' when you get to the tote, check out these tips.

There is no magic formula to picking a winner. But the more you know about the race and runners, the better your chances of making the right choice. That's why it pays to study the form.

Understanding the last five placings in a racebook:

On any form, the last five placings are read from right to left.

1-9 = place in which the horse finished

0 = finished 10th or worse

X = three month break from racing

Barrier draw number

1 is the closest to the inside rail and generally the favoured starting position.

Dividend/returns

How much you win for every dollar you have bet. The lower the dividends, the more popular the runner is.

Select your bet type

The TAB offers a huge variety of bet types to cover all tastes and skill levels - from Win, Place and Eachway bets for the novice punter to Percentage and Multi's for more experienced punters.

Some popular bet types to get you started:

WIN - the winner of the race

PLACE - the runner to finish either 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Although in some smaller fields (seven runners or less), to finish 1st or 2nd only.

EACHWAY - combines the Win and Place on the same horse. If your horse wins, you collect both the Win and Place dividend. If your horse finishes 2nd or 3rd you only collect the Place dividend.

QUINELLA - two runners to finish 1st and 2nd in either order.

TRIFECTA - three runners to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in that order. You can 'box' your runners so that they can come in any order.

FIRST FOUR - the first four horses home in one race in the correct order, similar to Trifecta (and can be boxed).

PICK 6 - a Pick6 is where you pick the winners of six seperate races nominated by the TAB. The prize can be up to $200,000!

EASYBET - if you cannot decide which horse to back, ask for an Easybet. It is a computer-generated bet where the TAB selects the runners for you based on where the money is going in a particular race. The minimum bet for an Easybet is $1.
