Circuit Breaker breaking out on Pukekohe Park
Auckland's newest cycling club here at Pukekohe Park
Cycling in around Pukekohe is growing. In fact, cycling is New Zealand’s fastest growing sport and recreational activity for adults 25+ and is the third most popular activity after walking and swimming. (Source: Sports NZ Active Survey 2013/14). It’s a great form of exercise that the whole family can enjoy, all while exploring our great Franklin and Waikato countryside.
But unfortunately traffic volumes are growing on our roads every day. Our rural roads are getting busier and busier. And this is a big barrier to getting on the bike.
So what better way to get new members involved and actively using the famous Pukekohe Park circuit than with their bicycle? With no traffic to contend with at allocated times, our motor racing circuit is an ideal facility for all cyclists of all abilities and age to use, whether for training, exercising or simply getting confident riding a bike.
In October Pukekohe Park is launching a new club, Circuit Breaker. This will be a cycling club which will enable members, at certain times, access to the circuit to train and exercise. It will also provide members with training advice and guidance, group training programmes as well as access to showers and changing facilities. It will also include membership to Counties Racing Club, so encouraging attendance to other Pukekohe Park events including horse racing.
Heading it up will be Peter Hunt, a local resident with a 17- acre lifestyle-block in Buckland. Peter is a keen competitive cyclist himself and will be the Cycling Coordinator for Circuit Breaker. He will be responsible for managing the Club and other cycling events planned for Pukekohe Park. With over 20 years marketing and advertising experience in NZ and the UK, Peter will help Pukekohe Park build up Circuit Breakers membership, expected to be 200 by the end of the first year. His previous roles include Commercial Manager at NZ Football where he was part of the team that created the then biggest football event in NZ’s history - the All Whites successful World Cup qualification game against Bahrain.
Peter will supervise the members’ exclusive use of the circuit from Monday to Friday, 5pm to 9pm, ensuring all aspects of the Parks’ Health and Safety requirements are adhered to. He will be on hand to ensure all members’ needs are met, provide assistance if needed and training advice. So whether a top performing cyclist or a first time cyclist, this facility will cater for all cyclists no matter what their needs.
An Open Day will be held on Thursday 27th October 2016 from 5:30pm, where we are inviting anyone interested to come down to see the track, see the facilities and understand how the club will work. They will be invited take their bike out on the track and have a go.
The Club will fully open its doors on the 9th November. The membership fee is normally $295 (incl GST), Juniors up to 16 yrs old $149 (incl GST). For the launch, and a limited time, we will be offering a discounted Founding Membership for $175 Adults, $75 Juniors (incl GST). And with Christmas fast approaching, this could be an excellent gift for Mum, Dad, husband, wife or family member.
